3 questions to ask yourself when you doubt.
Some Sundays you sit in the parking lot a little longer before you walk in. Can I be honest with you? I know that feeling well. You wonder if you really belong here. You wonder if someone else would have handled the morning better. You wonder if your volunteers can tell you’re still figuring things out. And that voice in your head keeps saying, “You’re not qualified. Who do you think you are?”
If that voice is loud for you right now, hear me: you are not alone. Many leaders carry the same quiet doubt. Imposter feelings often grow in the soil of hard work and deep care. Think about it. The very fact that you lose sleep over the kids in your room tells you something important. Your heart is in the right place.
Here is the truth I keep coming back to. Your calling was never built on being perfect. God did not hand you this ministry because you had it all figured out. He called you, and He is faithful to finish what He starts. Your worth is not a scorecard from last week’s craft time. Feeling inadequate doesn’t disqualify you. Often, it simply reminds you to lean on Him, and can I say Congrats, you are human!!
Galatians 6:9 says, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Notice the promise. The harvest comes at the proper time. Harvests take seasons. Your unseen faithfulness, the showing up, the praying, the quiet loving of kids, is seed. Even when you can’t see growth yet, it is still being planted.
When doubt gets loud, I want you to slow down and ask yourself three questions:
- What is true about my calling? Write down one reason God has placed you here.
- What faithful thing did I do this week? Name it, even if it felt small.
- Who can I invite into this with me? Doubt loses its grip when we are Better Together.
Don’t skip the third one. Isolation feeds imposter feelings. Community starves them.

Every leader has questions. Every leader faces hard choices.
Where do children’s ministry leaders go when you have questions that you need to not only get answers to but, to help you contextualize and implement in your context?
Facebook groups? Webinars? Video courses? Those aren’t bad options, and I’ve used all of them. But is that really where you’ll find the best answers for you in your ministry context?
An experienced ministry coach can ask questions to clarify and dig deeper into what you’re really looking for. They won’t tell you how to do it, but they will help you find the answer that is right before you.
