Refresh, Reconnect, and Refocus: Gearing Up for Fall in Kids Ministry

As the final days of summer vacation fade and the back-to-school season approaches, the rhythm of Kids Ministry shifts gears. After the whirlwind of VBS, summer camps, and busy schedules, this “in-between” season is the perfect opportunity to hit the reset button.

For every kids minister, this is not just about organizing calendars, it is about intentionality. Amidst the busyness of planning fall programming, here is where your focus should land:

Reconnect with Your Volunteers: Summer can cause a disconnect in your team’s consistency. Before the chaos of the fall launch, prioritize face-to-face time with your leaders. Host a casual appreciation event, coffee catch-up, or a vision-casting meeting. Remind them that they are not just “filling a slot,” but they are the heartbeat of the ministry. When volunteers feel valued and prepared, they enter the fall with renewed passion.
Sharpen Your Safety Protocols: As you welcome new families and returning students, safety must be a top priority. Use this time to conduct a “safety audit.” Refresh your check-in procedures, verify background checks, and walk through your physical space with a fresh set of eyes. Safety isn’t just about security; it’s about creating an environment where parents trust that their children are secure, allowing them to engage fully in worship.
Simplify for Impact: It is easy to get caught up in the “more is better” mindset. Instead, ask - What truly makes a difference? Focus your energy on the core of your mission discipling kids and partnering with families. If a program or event doesn’t directly serve that vision, give yourself permission to release it.
